How Breath Alcohol Testing Works

A breath alcohol tester, or breathalyser, uses an electrochemical sensor to detect alcohol in exhaled air and provide a rapid measurement result. Testing can usually be performed in active mode, where the person blows into a mouthpiece, or in passive mode, where the device samples alcohol in the surrounding air without one. Passive testing can be used for an initial indication before an active test, where supported by the device. Calibration intervals vary by model, so always follow the instructions for use to keep your results reliable over time, and individually packaged, single-use mouthpieces keep every test subject's breath separate during repeated testing.

Screening or Evidential Testing

Breath alcohol testing can serve two different purposes. A screening test gives a fast initial indication of alcohol in someone's breath, suitable for routine workplace or event checks. Evidential measurement is a different matter altogether, it calls for a device and process built to recognised standards, with proper calibration and documentation behind every result. Not every screening device is suitable for evidential use, so check this before you hire.

This depends on the device, measurement procedure, applicable approvals and your organisation's policy. A screening result may support an immediate safety decision, such as temporarily removing someone from a safety-critical task, but it should not automatically be treated as conclusive evidence. Where formal disciplinary or legal action is contemplated, follow your documented procedure and use an evidential measurement process where required by the applicable rules.
Not automatically. Drink-drive limits apply to driving offences and should not automatically be used as workplace alcohol policy thresholds. A workplace policy should reflect your own risk assessment, the safety sensitivity of the role and the applicable employment, health and safety, privacy and data protection requirements.
This depends on the device, power supply, operating conditions and test frequency. Published battery figures are approximate and model-specific, for example, certain devices are specified for approximately 1,500 tests, while other configurations can support up to 5,000 tests. For high-volume testing, specify the expected number of tests and the planned testing interval when selecting your equipment.
Calibration responsibility depends on the selected hire and service package. Some packages provide ready-to-use equipment, while others include calibration, maintenance and repair during the hire period. The applicable calibration interval also depends on the specific device and local requirements, and should be confirmed in the hire agreement.
