Which Escape Device Do You Need?

The right escape device depends on the hazards present, the oxygen concentration, the escape route and how long you may need before reaching a safe area. Filtering Escape Hoods

A filtering escape hood uses a specified filter to reduce certain toxic gases, vapours and particles while you breathe the surrounding air. Depending on the model, filtering escape hoods provide at least 15 minutes of escape protection, and may only be used when the oxygen concentration is sufficient and the atmosphere and contaminants fall within the filter's approved range.


Several models feature a self-adjusting internal head harness designed to accommodate a wide range of users, though suitability for individual factors such as glasses or facial hair should be checked for the specific model. The filter deploys automatically as soon as the packaging is opened, so the hood is ready to don within seconds.


Compressed Air Escape Devices

A compressed air escape device supplies breathing air from a small cylinder, independent of the surrounding atmosphere. Depending on the model, this can be a constant flow of air to a hood, for example available in 10 and 15-minute versions, with air beginning to flow as soon as the hood is taken out of its carrying case. The rated duration is based on specified test conditions rather than a guarantee for every user or situation, so it should be matched to your actual requirements before you hire.


Chemical Oxygen Self-Rescuers

A chemical oxygen self-rescuer works without relying on the air around you at all, generating breathable oxygen chemically within a closed breathing circuit. This makes it suitable for escaping smoke, toxic gases or oxygen deficiency alike, and it is a common choice for mining, tunnelling and other confined environments where conditions can change without warning. Nominal durations vary by model, and actual duration also depends on the wearer's breathing rate.

Escape devices are intended for escape only, not for planned work in the hazardous area, and the correct device must always be selected according to the hazard, oxygen concentration, escape route, required duration and applicable approvals. Once activated or opened, an escape device cannot be reused and must be replaced, so it is worth planning for enough units for everyone who might need one.

Escape devices are designed to be put on quickly and intuitively in an emergency. However, users should receive a practical briefing and, where possible, train with a dedicated training device beforehand. Training helps you understand the donning procedure and use the device correctly under stressful conditions.
This depends on the specific device and filter or cylinder fitted. Many filtering escape hoods include a viewing window so you can check the filter's expiry date and the general condition of the unit without opening the packaging, and a tamper seal shows if the device has already been opened. As part of your hire, we make sure every unit you receive is within its valid shelf life and ready to use.
As a general rule, you should have enough devices for everyone who may be exposed to the hazard, plus any additional units needed for rescue personnel entering to assist. Sites with confined spaces are generally expected to have a trained person on standby and suitable rescue equipment in place before anyone enters, so it's worth planning your numbers around your risk assessment rather than a fixed figure.
Yes, many filtering escape hoods can be fixed to a wall bracket or carried on a belt or shoulder strap, so they are within easy reach exactly where they might be needed. This is worth planning into your site layout, particularly near confined space entries or areas with a known risk of toxic gas or smoke.
If you cannot be certain the atmosphere will contain enough oxygen to filter safely, a compressed air escape device or chemical oxygen self-rescuer is the safer choice, since both supply air independently of the surrounding atmosphere. A filtering escape hood is only suitable when you know the specific contaminant and can confirm sufficient oxygen is present.
